SWT offers a full curriculum in jazz studies, including several big bands and combos, as well as courses in jazz improvisation, jazz arranging, jazz history, jazz pedagogy, and the business of music. Students have the opportunity to learn first hand from some of the top names in jazz who teach master classes and join SWT ensembles in concert. Past guest artists have included Clark Terry, Frank Foster, Kirk Whalum, Marvin Stamm, Bobby Shew, and many others. SWT jazz students and combos have won many prestigious Down Beat magazine awards in recent years, including three top student awards in 2000. The various jazz combos and ensembles appear regularly at European jazz festivals such as Montreux, North Sea, and Umbria. Students have ample gigging opportunities in the active music scenes of nearby Austin and San Antonio. |
