Style characteristics and performance practices:
- jazz music for use in the church or with church-related activities
- use of religious or spiritual text
- a merging of the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic elements of jazz with liturgical forms such as the mass, cantata, oratorio, etc.
- jazz music which can be used as incidental music in both formal and informal religious ceremonies
- Tune sources include:
- original compositions
- musical materials from both the liturgy and secular sources
- extant jazz types (the blues, etc.)
